Progress coalition presents incentives to relieve the electrification of Viennese car sharing providers
Vienna (OTS) – The city of Vienna has set itself the goal of becoming climate-neutral by 2040. In order for this to succeed, it is necessary to think about climate protection in all of the city’s projects. This also applies to the ongoing reform of Vienna’s state laws and regulations. Since January 2021, a working group set up by the red-pink progressive coalition has been examining the Viennese taxes with regard to ecological aspects and is constantly presenting new measures.
“The goal is clear: Measures that protect the climate and cushion the effects of climate change must be relieved. Climate protection is decided in the cities, because they are not only particularly affected by the consequences of climate change, but at the same time are also important drivers. Motorized traffic in particular is one of the biggest sources of CO2 in Vienna. Therefore, with the reform of the taxes, we are now taking further specific, temporary measures to support the switch to environmentally friendly e-mobility,” explains City Councilor for Finance and Economics Peter Hanke.
Significant relief for e-car sharing: Parking fees will drop to the level of residents and from 2025 only e-taxis in Vienna.
From 1.1. In 2023, e-car sharing providers will only have to pay 120 euros per year for parking their vehicles in Vienna instead of the previous 2,544 euros. This means that the parking meter fee drops to the level that residents (for their respective district) and authorized commercial enterprises also pay.
“In addition to the greening measure already presented, that from 2025 only new concessions will be issued for e-taxis, we are taking another step towards a climate-neutral Vienna in 2040 by reducing parking fees for e-car sharing providers. Over a hundred thousand Viennese are currently using them existing car sharing offers. It is therefore all the more important to create incentives so that, ideally, all providers convert their fleets to electrically powered vehicles,” says NEOS Vienna spokesman Markus Ornig.
At the end of June, the environment ministers of the EU countries agreed to phase out combustion engines in new cars from 2035. The City of Vienna has been pushing the switch to environmentally friendly e-mobility for years. With the planned measure regarding support for e-car sharing companies, Vienna is now providing them with additional support. The amendment to the law is to be passed in the Vienna State Parliament on September 22nd, and will then come into force on January 1st, 2023.
