The head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, suggests to EU member states that the twenty-seventh suspend regular political dialogue with Israel. He was led to this by the reports of various independent international organizations, according to which Israel violates human rights and international humanitarian law. This is reported by the DPA agency with reference to officials in the EU.

The political dialogue between the EU and Israel is governed by the so-called association agreement from 2000. Its aim is to strengthen mutual relations and develop the partnership between the EU and Israel.
The DPA agency reminds that the document states that their mutual relations are based on respect for human rights and democratic principles.
Borrell already announced in October that he wanted to discuss with foreign ministers the way in which Israel conducts its war in the <a href="https://www.world-today-news.com/us-wing-movement-allegedly-provides-arms-to-hamas-page-all/" title="US Wing Movement Allegedly Provides Arms to Hamas Page all”>Gaza Strip against the terrorist movement Hamas and in Lebanon against the Shiite militant movement Hezbollah.
Ireland and Spain indicated a long time ago that they would like to review the agreement with Israel. In addition to political dialogue, it also concerns economic cooperation in areas such as industry, energy, transport and tourism. According to the DPA, the diplomats emphasize that interrupting the political dialogue does not mean suspending the association agreement.
Czech Republic on Israel’s side
For Borrell’s proposal to pass, all twenty-seven states would have to support it. However, this is unlikely, as countries such as the Czech Republic and Hungary have so far clearly sided with Israel.
According to DPA, EU officials explain that from Borrell’s point of view, the very discussion of suspending dialogue with Israel could be a clear political signal.
DPA writes that this proposal could be Borrell’s last initiative at the head of EU diplomacy. In the summer, the member states chose former Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas as his successor. He will be able to take up the post when the European Parliament gives the green light to the new European Commission.
