Borrell assumes that Felipe VI did not respond to AMLO’s letter

Mexico City, The head of diplomacy of the European Union (EU), the Spanish Josep Borrell, stated that during his visit to Mexico for the inauguration of President Claudia Sheinbaum he found in the Mexican authorities a “willingness” to leave behind the dispute derived from that King Felipe VI did not respond to a letter from former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador in which the monarch was invited to apologize together with the Mexican government for the atrocities committed in the Conquest.

In statements made in Spain, Borrell assured that he is responsible for the king’s failure to respond, since when the Spanish government received the letter he was the Minister of Foreign Affairs. It was decided not to respond “with the best intention of avoiding useless controversies,” said Borrel, who was in Mexico on Monday in his capacity as High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs for the beginning of Sheinbaum’s government, a ceremony to which Spanish government did not send any official representative.

“And that is the message that I have passed on to my Mexican interlocutors, in whom I have seen an absolute willingness to overcome this problem, strengthen ties and work for a common future,” added Borrel at a press conference in Spain.

“I was the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Spain when the letter arrived. So if there is someone responsible for not answering, it was not the king, as I have heard from some deputy. “The king is politically irresponsible,” he said.
