Bulgarian Political Scene in Turmoil: Borisov Blasts Rivals, Stands Firm on Coalition Stance
Following Bulgaria’s recent election, former Prime Minister Boyko Borisov has ignited a firestorm of political drama. The GERB party leader, known for his assertive style, has publicly refused to endorse a proposed political barrier against influential businessman Delyan Peevski. This move has created a rift, deepening the existing divide within Bulgaria’s fragmented political landscape.
Borisov, speaking in Targovishte, presented a controversial proposition: forming a government without the nationalist "Vazrazhdane" party and the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS), the party representing Bulgaria’s ethnic Turkish minority.
"Without ‘Vazrazhdane’ and the two DPS, things would have worked out," Borisov stated. He claimed that GERB was ready to support a candidate for parliament speaker proposed by the reformist "Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria" (PP-DB) alliance, along with Atanasov, but the deal fell through because PP-DB opted to pursue a coalition with "Vazrazhdane."
Adding fuel to the fire, Borisov accused PP-DB of playing coy about their preferred candidate for Prime Minister, suggesting they lacked a viable option or were deliberately keeping it shrouded in secrecy. "If it was me," he retorted, "they would ask me 100 times."
Meanwhile, Borisov painted GERB’s main ideological battle as being against "Vazrazhdane," accusing PP-DB of being blinded by their own convictions. He lashed out at smaller parties, questioning their legitimacy and arguing that GERB, with its 69 seats in parliament, holds the real mandate of the people.
"Two weeks after the elections, parties with 18 deputies each, with as many votes as we have here in Targovishte, come out of the rostrum and start giving their opinion and considering that it is the most correct opinion, they speak on behalf of the people. Who gave you this right?"
Borisov asserted that GERB would only seek coalition partners once they reached a minimum of 77-78 seats in parliament, a position that effectively bars them from immediate participation in a coalition government.
The GERB leader also criticized PP-DB co-chairman Kiril Petkov, alleging he tried to strike a deal with "Vazrazhdane" to make Boyko Rashkov acting Prime Minister.
"Their goals became clear to me, not only to me, but to everyone. These people are used to getting a club and using it in an unforgiving way," Borisov alleged.
The political deadlock in Bulgaria raises concerns about the country’s future, with Borisov’s defiant stance leaving many wondering whether a stable government can be formed and what the implications might be for Bulgaria’s relations with its European neighbors.
