Boris Johnson’s party is over

If the House of Commons is elected, the British Conservatives will lose a supposedly impregnable Tory stronghold. In the course of the lockdown party affair, Boris Johnson, who once guaranteed success, threatens to become a sustainable mortgage for the Tories.

From a charismatic winner to a mortgage? British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is in a slump in popularity, as confirmed by his party’s election failure on Thursday.

The constituency of North Shropshire in the English Midlands west of Birmingham is one of the strongholds of the Conservative Party. There are still many farmers among the rural population, the electorate clearly voted in favor of leaving the EU in the 2016 Brexit referendum, and the proportion of homeowners is high. It is therefore a veritable surprise coup that the Liberal Democrats won the lower house by-election in North Shropshire on Thursday – and wrested the seat from conservative hands for the first time in 200 years.
