The vote was initiated by his own party

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has won a no-confidence vote initiated by his own Conservative Party, the BBC reports.

211 Tory members voted for him to remain prime minister. 148 out of 359 voted against. The final results show that 58.8 percent of those who voted supported Johnson, against 41.2 percent who do not trust him.

This means that distrust in the current prime minister is much lower than that of his predecessor Theresa May, who received 63 percent support from the Tories during a similar vote in 2018. She resigned 6 months later.

The result of the secret ballot was announced by Sir Graham Brady. However, the chairman of the 1922 Committee told the assembled deputies: “I can say that despite the result, the party does not trust the prime minister.”

The vote came after the Partygate scandal erupted after it became clear that members of government and officials at Johnson’s office had organized parties during the COVID pandemic, when such gatherings were banned across the country. A recent investigation revealed that the prime minister personally participated in these parties – something he had previously denied. This led to a drop in his rating. Johnson officially apologized, but refused to resign.
