Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson withdraws from the fight for leadership of the Conservative Party. He says he hoped his opponent and former finance minister Rishi Sunak and Penny Mordaunt could meet, but says they failed to do so. With his retirement, the way for Sunak seems clear to succeed former Prime Minister Truss.
“I am convinced that I am in a good position to give the Conservative Party an electoral victory in 2024. These days I have unfortunately had to conclude that this step is not the right one. You cannot govern effectively without a united party in parliament.
The Conservative party will vote for Truss’s successor tomorrow. With Johnson out of the race, veteran politician Sunak (42) appears to be the candidate with the best cards. He was also the only Conservative to date to get the necessary 100 votes from MPs. He had 130 today, according to the BBC, more than enough to run for leadership.
