Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Friday announced his resignation as a member of the House of Commons amid a scandal over parties on Downing Street during covid restrictions.
It is reported by “European truth“.
In a long-winded statement, Johnson criticized the House of Commons Privilege Committee’s investigation into what is known as Partygate, claiming it was intended to be used to “kick me out of Parliament.”
“Their (committee – ed.) goal from the very beginning was to accuse me regardless of the facts,” Johnson said, calling the investigation against himself a “witch hunt.”
The ex-prime minister of Britain made the decision to lay down his parliamentary mandate on the same day he received the report of the Committee on Privileges, which was supposed to establish did Johnson deliberately mislead deputiestestifying about parties in Downing Street.
The politician himself admitted that he was telling a lie, but denied that he did it knowinglyto avoid punishment.
Johnson’s resignation means an early election is called in his constituency of Uxbridge and South Ruislip. From his statement it follows that he will participate in them.
Recall that at the end of 2021, a number of publications appeared in the press, alleging parties on Downing Street, which took place under strict lockdown conditions. At first, Johnson denied wrongdoing, but then he was forced to admit he was wrong.
The Committee on Privileges of the House of Commons has the power to temporarily disqualify and even call a repeat election in the district of a deputy whom he finds guilty.
