Boris Johnson recovering after ‘routine’ surgery

Johnson’s “minor” sinus operation took place on Monday morning and Johnson is back in Downing Street recovering, his spokesman said.

Johnson was put under general anesthesia during the operation, and Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab is deputy.

The prime minister hopes to chair his cabinet meeting on Tuesday, but his return to work will depend on how he feels, the spokesman added.

“My understanding is that there is a 24-hour period from when the operation takes place… under which the kind of important decisions would probably be deferred in the first instance to the deputy prime minister,” Johnson’s spokesman said, according to PA.

“Now we’re not anticipating any of that being required currently, but we do have that capability,” they added.

The operation had been previously scheduled and was carried out at the National Health Service in Great Britain.

Johnson is expected to attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Rwanda later this week, and his party also faces two major local by-elections on Thursday.

He spent several days in hospital with covid-19 in April 2020 and was briefly in intensive care.
