British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is considering the construction of a tunnel to connect Scotland with Northern Ireland, various British media report on Monday. The tunnel will have a length of 25 miles (approximately 40 kilometers) and will facilitate trade between Northern Ireland and the other parts of the United Kingdom.
The United Kingdom is also technically no longer part of the EU since 1 January. Northern Ireland is therefore in a difficult position. Northern Ireland belongs to the same kingdom as England, Wales and Scotland, but borders Ireland, which is still part of the EU. At the same time, Scotland and Northern Ireland are separated by the Irish Sea.
As a result, trade has been less smooth since Brexit. A tunnel for both trains and trucks should partly solve this problem. This should be located between Larne in Northern Ireland and Stranraer in Scotland. The plan has already been nicknamed ‘Boris’s Burrow’. Loosely translated: Boris’s lair.
Alister Jack, who deals with Scottish affairs on behalf of the British cabinet, has already objected The Telegraph said he is in favor of the plan. Within a few weeks, the British rail operator Network Rail will publish a report on the feasibility of the plan.
Johnson came up with plans for a bridge between Northern Ireland and Scotland three years ago. However, this turned out to be a bad idea, partly because the connection would probably have to be closed for about 100 days a year due to the weather conditions in the Irish Sea.
