Boris Johnson has claimed he found a listening device in his personal bathroom at the UK Foreign Office after it was used by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The former British prime minister described his security team finding surveillance devices in the toilets after Netanyahu had used the facilities. The couple met in 2017 when Johnson was Britain’s foreign secretary.
The claim is contained in Johnson’s memoir Unleashed, a book out on October 10. Excerpts were shared with the Daily Telegraph newspaper.
“There Bibi freshened up for a while, and it may or may not be a coincidence, but I was told that later when they were doing a regular sweep for bedbugs that they found a listening device on the toilet seat,” Johnson writes of the encounter.
The Telegraph pressed the former prime minister on whether he could reveal more details about what happened, although Johnson told them: “I think everything you need to know about this episode is in the book.”
Earlier Western media reports have indicated that the US government believed Israel was responsible for installing surveillance devices in Washington.
Johnson’s memoir has sparked comments in London before it was even published.
Britain’s former prime minister, who was ousted by his party in 2022, revealed details of Queen Elizabeth II’s health in her final year and accused French President Emmanuel Macron of trying to “punish” the UK for leaving the EU.
