Boris Becker is sentenced to prison

Becker is sentenced by Southwark Crown Court in London to 30 months in prison after being found guilty of four counts in the case concerning his personal bankruptcy in 2017.

The former German tennis star will serve half the time behind bars, according to the verdict that fell on Friday and was announced by judge Deborah Taylor. It writes British media and international news agencies.

Becker risked a significantly longer prison sentence if convicted of more than four counts. The German was freed in 20.

Among other things, was convicted Becker for hiding assets and for hiding debts. The total value amounts to just over SEK 30 million. He is said to have transferred large sums of money from his company account, failed to declare a property in Germany, concealed a bank loan of just over eight million kronor and a shareholding in a technology company.

Prosecutor Rebecca Chalkley said Becker had acted “knowingly and dishonestly” and that he “was still trying to blame others.”

As early as 2002, the German was sentenced to a suspended prison term for failing to pay taxes. Although Becker was written in Monaco, he had lived in Germany for long periods.

Becker has lived in London – not far from the Wimbledon tennis arena – since 2012.

He finished his successful active career in 1999. The hard-hitting German won Wimbledon three times, the Australian Open twice and the US Open once. He won a total of 49 tournaments, but none on gravel.

Two of his main opponents during his career were the Swedes Mats Wilander and Stefan Edberg. Becker and Edberg met each other three years in a row in the final at Wimbledon. Edberg won twice, in 1988 and 1990.

With Becker as team anchor, Germany won the Davis Cup finals against Sweden in 1988 and 1989.
