The Puerto Rican dancer César Abreu of the Metropolitan Opera House in New York, organizes and produces one of the first cultural events in person in this city, after a year of closure and pandemic, entitled Open Air Opera: Street Dances, tomorrow Sunday, from 11:00 am, on 75th Street between Broadway and West End in Manhattan.
“This is part of the New York City’s Open Culture program and after doing a thousand things at the same time, I had the good fortune to produce it. Everything was off and there have been no activities. It has been like the old west without subways, without the bustle of Times Square, well desolate and closed. I’ve been at the Metropolitan for 16 years and we were desperate. They canceled all the functions and finally Boricua, I decided to cover their faces and said “‘let’s go to the corners with tambourines to make noise’. Legislation was passed so that cultural corporations can reach the streets to entertain the public, ”Abreu said in an interview with THE SPOKESMAN.
They filled out an application and were authorized for the outdoor production in collaboration with members of the Met Orchestra, their dancers, a soprano and their recorded choir. In the morning they will do educational and artistic activities for children, they will rehearse in front of the public taking into account the proper protocols both there and here.

“The idea is to share with the five boroughs of New York what we do at the Met, with the musicians talking about what it’s like to play in one of the most important opera houses in the world, what you have to go through to get there and offer complete classes ”, added the exMenudo.
He specified that “we want it to be informal and humorous; and bring some joy. We want them to see the process of putting on a show so they can take that balm with them after being locked up. The event will include dance and opera music demonstrations for the entire audience. In the afternoon the dancers will merge with the participation and collaboration of members of his orchestra and the Metropolitan Chorus Artists ”.
Abreu is from Bayamón and from the age of seven he worked regularly on variety shows such as Súper Sábados and El Pueblito News. He was part of the Los Angelitos program and was a member of Menudo.
In New York she did her master’s degree in theater and dance at New York University (NYU). Years later, he was part of the cast of the musical Broadway Cats and its international tour.
Regarding Sunday’s activity, in which he has the support of his colleagues Natalia Alonso, María Pegan and Reka Echerer, he announced that he seeks to “maintain the positive atmosphere and fill the attendees with motivation and inspiration.”
At the end of June he will serve as co-director and choreographer of Broadway Bars with 200 dancers all from Broadway.
“In 2019 before covid-19 we raised $ 2 million and we continue to grow on this 30th anniversary,” said the artist.
