Toluca, Edomex; October 12, 2024. With an area of around 20 hectares, 16 hectares of water, delimited with mesh, which prevents invasion, poaching and predation, the “Las Maravillas” Board of the Autonomous State University of Mexico (UAEMex), located in the “El Cerrillo” Campus, in the municipality of Toluca, is an important refuge for a significant number of migratory birds from southern Canada and the United States.

Within the framework of World Migratory Bird Day, which this year 2024 will be commemorated on October 12, the university academic and person in charge of this space, León Velázquez Beltrán, stated that five species of birds reside in Bordo – ducks, herons and water hens-; However, the star is the Mexican duck (Anas diazi), recognized as a species only a couple of years ago.

It should be noted that around a dozen species of birds migrate to “Las Maravillas”, among them, the swallow duck, the spoonbill duck, the striped mareca and the russet pijije, fleeing the cold of the north and finding safe conditions in El Bordo. and a good power supply.

He pointed out that, during the migration season, which began in September, but particularly at the end of December and in January, very early and in the afternoon, it is possible to see high densities of birds. During the day they move to other bodies of water, mainly to the Lerma wetlands, and at night they spend the night on campus.

Finally, León Velázquez Beltrán highlighted that the Autonomous University of the State of Mexico is one of the few higher education institutions in the world to have a space like the “Las Maravillas” Bordo, which can be used for education, research and conservation.
