Taking into account the situation at the border, Scholtz called for explanations about possible violations in the issuance of visas in neighboring Poland.
According to Scholz, it should be: “Those who come to Poland register there and go through the asylum procedure on the spot,” instead of visas being somehow issued for money, which only exacerbates the problem.
This should be discussed with the Polish government, he said. Scholz added that depending on the current situation, “additional measures may have to be taken at the borders”.
The German police union has been demanding the restoration of random border controls on the German-Polish and German-Czech borders for a long time, as the number of illegal migrants who are detained in the interior of Germany and therefore cannot be deported back to the country from which they entered has increased dramatically.
On the other hand, Interior Minister Nancy Fezer, who, like Scholtz, represents the Social Democrats (SPD), opposes it, stressing that the emphasis should be on a fairer distribution of migrants within the European Union, as well as on the control of the EU’s external borders.
However, on September 14, the German Ministry of the Interior announced that the country would not accept migrants from Italy as part of a voluntary solidarity pact. The agreement stipulated that Germany would take in 3,500 asylum seekers who entered the EU for the first time in Italy. This was intended to ease the situation in Italy, one of the main points of entry for migrants into the EU.
