Border police thwarted attempts by two groups of migrants to cross the country’s border, the Ministry of the Interior announced.
On January 30 and 31, a total of 32 illegal migrants were caught at the border crossing – Danube bridge Vidin – Calafat. They were found in trucks driven by Turkish citizens.
In one of the cases, 13 migrants were hidden in the trailer of the truck. In the course of the investigation, it was clarified that some of them have alien registration cards issued by the State Agency for Refugees, and the others do not have valid personal documents.
Similarly, 19 foreign nationals were found in another truck with Turkish license plates. The refugees are from Syria and Iraq, and among them there were also minors.
The Ministry of the Interior emphasizes that when the migrants were discovered, a new method of transportation and an attempt to take them out of Bulgaria to Romania was established. The scheme is carried out with the participation of Turkish citizens – truck drivers, who deliberately change the structure of the locking mechanism of the cargo compartment. In this way, when the migrants board, it is opened without violating the integrity of the customs seal placed when crossing the external border of the EU. This method deceives the controlling border officials that the cargo hold has already been inspected. According to the data, the ultimate goal of the migrants is to reach the countries of Western Europe.
The drivers of the vehicles are brought as defendants for committed crimes under Art. 280, para. 2, item 1, item 2, item 3 and item 4, para. 1, cf. Art. 18, para. 1 of the NC. By decree of the supervising prosecutor, they are detained for up to 72 hours.
The trucks were seized as material evidence in the case.
Migrants are subject to pre-trial proceedings for attempting to cross the border illegally. They are brought as defendants for committed crimes under Art. 279, para. 1, cf. Art. 18, para. 1 of the Criminal Code and are detained for up to 72 hours.
In the course of the investigation, it was clarified that one of the accused – 27-year-old L.H. from Syria, was sentenced just days earlier for the same crime.
The court’s ruling on the requests of the District Prosecutor’s Office – Vidin to take measures for remand “detention in custody” against the accused persons is pending.
