Border Patrol locates Guatemalan boy in Arizona desert

The United States Border Patrol located an 8-year-old Guatemalan boy walking alone in the Sasabe Desert in Tucson, Arizona.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Minex) reported that the minor was separated from his mother in Guatemala to take him irregularly to the United States. The report indicates that the minor had just entered the North American country.

According to the Minex press release, the staff of the Guatemalan Consulate in Tucson, Arizona, provides assistance and protection to the child.

Border Patrol agents contacted the Consular Mission to indicate that they had found the minor. He is originally from Chichicastenango and was walking unaccompanied in the Sasabe desert, in the state of Arizona, bordering Mexico.

Guatemalan officials spoke with the minor and verified that he was in good health. The boy told them that he was traveling with his mother to reunite with his father, who lives in the United States; however, in Mexico, they separated him from his mother.

The boy said unknown persons took him to the border to enter the United States irregularly.

The Consular Mission contacted the father of the minor to notify him of the rescue and communication with him will be maintained.

While the paperwork is being done, the child is in a processing center and will soon be taken to a shelter; When this happens, Guatemalan officials will check that he has all the hygiene and food conditions, for the duration of his immigration case.
