Good news for all Swiss people who love to travel: the borders with neighboring countries should open again quickly. At least those to the neighboring countries Germany, France and Austria.
In the past few days, Minister of Justice Karin Keller-Sutter has made various calls to her counterparts Horst Seehofer (D), Christophe Castaner (F) and Karl Nehammer (AT) about the return to freedom of travel. “Everyone wants the border situation to normalize as quickly as possible,” Agnès Schenker, spokeswoman for Federal Councilor Keller-Sutter, confirms the information in this newspaper. Schenker says about border traffic with Germany, France and Austria:
“The common goal is that we should have a normal border situation with these three countries again in the coming weeks.”
The prerequisite, of course, is always that the spread of the corona virus in the three countries – and in Switzerland – should remain contained. A border opening with Italy, which is still badly affected, can be expected less quickly.
The solution is to come even faster for lovers
At the three borders, the opening for people who have suffered particularly from the difficult situation in the past few weeks should come even faster: unmarried couples who live in different countries. But also vacation home owners.
However, there are still some unanswered questions. State Secretary Mario Gattiker has been commissioned to work out the exact details for each of the three countries. “Specific agreements are needed with every country,” says Schenker. Therefore, it cannot give any information about an exact time.
There are currently strict rules at the borders. Border crossers are allowed to enter the country for work, as are married couples when they visit their spouses. For concubinate couples, entry is prohibited, apart from a very few hardship cases. Germany’s strict rules apply until May 15th. These days the government in Berlin has to decide whether and how the measures will be continued. Various state premiers called for border openings.
