Border municipalities will look at the possibility of becoming tax-free municipalities

The general manager of Halden Næringsutvikling, Veronica Lund, believes that politicians must think new to stop the trade leakage.

– Such as shops open on Sundays, change the taxes on food, and let border towns become tax-free municipalities, Lund says to The P4 news.

Mayor Eli Wathne in Kongsvinger would like a proposal to become a tax-free municipality to be studied.

– There is clearly a need to think new about border issues. We will have trade between Norway and Sweden, but trade can not just go one way, says Wathne.

Petter Haas Brubakk, CEO of NHO Mat og Drikke, believes that the proposal for tax-free cities is poorly thought out.

– This means that we create an even greater competitive difference in the different parts of the country. In addition, the tax-free scheme is illogical. And it is not thought through to expand that scheme, he says.
