Bordeaux Métropole inaugurated this Tuesday, July 11 in Artigues-près-Bordeaux an area which will accommodate from May to September, during summer itineraries, between 50 and 200 caravans. With the opening of the Mérignac site, scheduled for the end of the summer, the metropolis will be in compliance with the departmental scheme for the reception and housing of travelers with regard to high traffic areas.
It is a vast bare land of 4 hectares, at the edge of the ring road, opposite the Cenon incinerator and under a high voltage line. The access barrier has not yet been installed, nor have all the water and electricity points for the 50 to 200 caravans that will be able to stay here.
Despite this somewhat bucolic setting, the inauguration of this high traffic area, the second in the metropolis after that of Tourville, in Bordeaux, was unanimously celebrated by the officials present this Tuesday morning in Artigues-près-Bordeaux, including Stéphane Couget , representative of the AGP (association grand passage):
“It is ideally located, close to the city and transport infrastructure, unlike other areas close to wastewater treatment plants or railway lines. We were associated with its design, and it is important to check in particular that the water and electricity flows are sufficient, and do not cause fires. »
“Happy Life”
Groups of Travelers must first book with a coordinator of high traffic areas in Gironde, then pay a deposit (a few hundred euros per group) and rent the pitches (about twenty euros per week and per For pastor Stéphane Couget, the creation of such an area limits wild settlements:
“When municipalities have rest areas, there are no longer any problems with travellers. They are fed up with a miserable life, where they end up landing in places where they are not allowed and getting fined. »
Alain Garnier, mayor of Artigues, recalls that four illicit installations of this kind are underway in his town, generating some tension “that the Artiguais population is finding it more and more difficult to accept”. Also, the elected official and Alain Anziani, president of Bordeaux Métropole, mutually praised the “political courage” of their colleague in their determination to create this “unpopular” equipment, and representing an investment of 3.4 million euros.

“12 years after the first Departmental Scheme for the reception and housing of travelers, we will finally succeed in respecting it”, underlines the mayor of Mérignac, who will open at the end of the summer in his commune the third area of great passage that the metropolis is required to have:
“How can we tell Travelers that they were not respecting the law by illegally occupying land when we ourselves were not complying with the rules? We must also respect their living conditions, giving them the opportunity to live their lives as they see fit. »
900 spaces to be created
Municipalities that comply with their obligations to create spaces for Travelers – in reception or high-traffic areas and family land – also benefit from a simplified procedure for the evacuation by the police of squatted land, recalls Etienne Guyot, prefect of Gironde. A procedure that Artigues can now use, unlike other municipalities.
Alain Anziani denounced “the comedies” played by certain town halls, which “first said yes to the creation of a reception area, before having a vote against their municipal council, which was not required to be consulted”. A tackle addressed to Pessac without naming it: citing the hostility of local residents, the third city of the department has indeed backpedaled on the opening of an area of 20 pitches, offering other land to the metropolis.
This area of Pessac, if it sees the light of day, as well as that planned in Bordeaux, in Brazza, would complete the scheme as far as the metropolis is concerned. In total, the Gironde still has to create 6 reception areas, for a total of 160 places, 4 high-traffic areas with 700 places – a goal almost achieved – and 146 places in family grounds. On this point, the department is still far from the account.
