Bordeaux: An armed man shot dead by the police, he had escaped from a psychiatric hospital: News

The identity of the man who tried to attack police officers in Bordeaux on Friday has been revealed. The man who was killed was a “runaway” from a psychiatric hospital.

According to the prosecution, it was “Mathieu D., aged 44 and living in Bruges (33) having run away from the Charles Perrens Hospital Centre where he was hospitalised”, reports The Figaro.This hospital center specializes in psychiatry and mental health. The man allegedly fled from this Bordeaux hospital before going to a grocery store in the city to commit the “theft of a knife with a long blade”. The anti-crime brigade (BAC) then intervened and the man brandished his knife “in a threatening manner” before trying to “to flee”.

The man allegedly refused to comply with the police orders and headed in a “threatening” towards one of them. He was then allegedly targeted by a LBD shot to the shoulder, then by four gunshots. The forensic pathologist who studied Mathieu D.’s body noted “four impacts on the body of the deceased.”

Two investigations are open

The prosecution has opened two investigations. The first against the man killed by the police, for “theft, threats with a weapon against persons in authority, attempted murder of a law enforcement officer”. The second is open for “voluntary homicide by a person in a position of public authority”. According to initial analyses, the police officer who fired the fatal shot was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs. In addition, witnesses attest to “the man’s threatening attitude.” The police officer was not taken into custody. CCTV footage will support the investigation.
