Saturday February 13, feminist activists took action to Bordeaux (Gironde) baptized “Bloody Valentine” to denounce the publisexisme and the Valentine’s Day, considered as a commercial and patriarchal celebration.
“My body is not a marketing tool”
“My body is not a marketing tool”, “Love more, consume less”, “Valentine’s Day enriches patriarchy” and others slogans have been displayed on the lingerie store windows, as Intimissimi, Etam, Calzedonia or Princess Tamtam, or on billboards, accompanied by fake blood splashes.
Valentine’s Day is a commercial celebration as old as the world, and yet denounced every year. A ritual of consumption for some, a cult of heterosexuality for others, and social pressure for many, at a time when isolation and depression reach considerable heights.
Other actions planned by March 8
From 7 a.m., activists from different groups such as Extinction Rébellion Bordeaux, ANV COP-21 Gironde or Collages Féministes Bordeaux therefore carried out their feminist action of civil disobedience, which calls for others until March 8, a day of struggle for Women’s rights.
“We are in 2021, and despite the advances of the past few decades, the cult of thinness, youth, hair removal, whitening, injunctions and stereotypes are still running, invoking for some a personal pressure and an invisible discomfort often manifested by the eating disorder, psychological or overconsumption, and for others, an incitement to sexual violence, ”say the activists.
