Boralex selected by the State of New York for five 540 MWp solar power plants – pv magazine International

The projects will produce more than 1 TWh of renewable electricity each year and include Boralex’s first storage project in the United States, with a capacity of 77 MW.

The Canadian producer Boralex has won five solar projects in New York State in the United States totaling a capacity of 540 MWp as part of a call for tenders organized in 2021 by the New York State Research and Development Authority ( NYSERDA). Once built, these sites will produce more than 1 TWh of solar electricity annually.

In detail, the selected facilities will be located in the northwest of the state:
– Fort Covington Solar Park is a 250 MWp solar energy facility. It is also equipped with a 77 MW battery storage unit in the town of Fort Covington, in Franklin County, a first for Boralex in the country. The system will be developed in partnership with Savion.
– Newport Solar Park is a 130 MW solar energy facility located in Deerfield, Oneida County and Newport, Herkimer County. Its annual production is estimated at 244,842 MWh.
– Fort Edward Solar Park is a 100 MW solar power facility located in the cities of Argyle and Fort Edward, Washington County. Its annual production is estimated at 192,720 MWh.
– Foothills Solar Park is a 40 MW solar energy facility in Mayfield, Fulton County. Its annual production is estimated at 75,336 MWh.
– Easton Solar Park is a 20 MW solar energy facility located in Easton, Washington County. Its annual production is estimated at 38,369 MWh.

At the same time, Boralex created the “Beyond Renewable Energies” fund to support project host communities and disadvantaged populations. Throughout the duration of operation, resources and funding will thus be provided to local partners so that they can devote themselves to education programs in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, as well as advanced training for employees. “We look forward to following the development of this project and seeing the economic benefits associated with the development of solar parks,” said Timothy Fisher, Supervisor of the City of Fort Edward.

720 MWp won in two years

In order to support New York State’s goal of 70% renewable electricity by 2030, NYSERDA launched a fifth call for tenders in April 2021. Boralex and the authority will enter into 20-year agreements under the “Renewable Energy Standard” for the purchase of renewable energy credits associated with the energy production of the selected projects. The energy associated with these credits must be consumed in New York State. The price of the credits will be indexed to a benchmark energy and capacity price, which will cover the projects’ market energy and capacity revenues, removing the need for a long-term purchase agreement separate term for the sale of energy and capacity for these projects.

As part of its 2019 call for tenders, the State of New York had previously selected Boralex for its Green Corners (120 MWp), Sandy Creek (20 MWp), Bald Mountain (20 MWp) and West River ( 20 MWp). In total, the Canadian company has therefore won 720 MW of new projects in two years, to which must be added the acquisition of the 20 MWp Sky High solar park.
