Genoa – Doctors, pharmacists, health workers and engineers. But also, yacht designer. In an unexpected trend but common to many Italian universities, the University of Genoa also grew in numbers during the year of the pandemic, registering an increase in freshmen of 25%, a 7% more in total enrollments (but the figure rises to + 17.4% if we consider the more numerous courses, the three-year ones) and a general positive trend also in registrations from outside the region and from abroad.
In total, in one year, the iwritings reached 34,000 from 31,500 last year. But the most interesting performances concern the new enrollments: a real boom, that of the school of medical sciences and pharmaceuticals, led by Gianmario Sambuceti, which nearly doubled the number of new members, with 762 more freshmen. Very significant too the growth of 401 new students in the first year courses of the polytechnic school, directed by Giorgio Roth.
“Surely the Medicine and Pharmacy courses have attracted many students due to the health emergency linked to Covid that we are experiencing – he observes Nicoletta Dacrema, Deputy Rector of Unige – but also the departments of the Polytechnic School have had an excellent increase, in some cases surprising as the course of Nautical Design which last year had 151 students and, this year, reached 527 ». What particularly gratifies the governance of via Balbi are the growth percentages of the numbers of students who come from other regions.
«In a year we have passed from 5643 to 6800 members from other regions and from abroad – continues Dacrema – We have grown not only in the neighboring regions (Piedmont, Lombardy and Tuscany), but we have also done very well in central and southern Italy (Abruzzo, Campania, Puglia) and even in Friuli Venezia Giulia where we record a boom of 220% . In Lombardy the growth rate was 190% ». “These are important numbers that photograph a situation of great increase and progressive strength of Unige, which increasingly proposes itself as a university of important national and international level – says the Vice Rector – In particular, the courses related to the theme of the sea are very attractive also for students who come from outside ».
To Medicine and Pharmacy off-site numbers went from 200 to 552 in one year, at the Politecnica from 275 to 490. In the other schools there was also a slight increase in enrollment and non-resident students. The Department of Earth, Environment and Life Sciences (Distav) has + 8.5% of freshmen, Social Sciences stands at a slightly lower + 8%, Humanities records a growth of 6%. In these schools too, off-site students have grown: at the Distav non-Ligurian freshmen have almost doubled, going from 99 to 176. In Social Sciences, the gap of freshmen is a few hundred while off-site students have gone from 223 to 316. Finally, in the humanities, off-site workers have grown by about ten: today they are 163, last year they were 142.
“The pandemic has certainly oriented many freshmen to studies in medicine, pharmacy and health professions in general – Dacrema is still right – but I believe that there were also other factors at stake: the perspective and quality of study courses, internationalization of our university and, last but not least, the beauty of Genoa which is an important factor ».
Growth in world rankings
Yesterday was also disseminated the data of the prestigious international ranking Quacquarelli Symonds, in Qs jargon, which measures the performance of universities worldwide. Compared to the last ranking of 2019, the University of Genoa has risen by about 50 positions, passing from the range between the positions 701/750 to that between 651/700. “We are very happy with this growth in what is considered the most important world ranking together with The (Times higher education) which sees us in the 401/500 range and the Green Metric which measures the sustainability of the university: last year we went up of 21 positions, going from the 131th place in 2019 to the 110th place in 2020 – he explains Fulvio Mastrogiovanni, Vice Rector for Internationalization – We are certainly an expanding university also at an international level. Until a few years ago we had 4 courses in English, today there are 16 and more and more teachers want to translate their study courses into English in order to attract more and more students from outside. This will favor us both with Italian students who want a more international course of study and with foreign students: this year, with registrations open until June, we have already received the same number of applications as we closed last year. a year, or 2500 students from all over the world “.—
