Books to Books: Bringing Literature to Libros, the Municipality of Teruel

Madrid

Literature shapes many lives. There are those who laugh, fall in love and travel through books. There are also places that are marked by literary stories. Libros, the municipality of Teruel, seemed to be the ideal place to become the cradle of letters. However, the region does not have a Public Library that lives up to its name. The Books to Books initiative, which began to take shape in 2020, seeks to change this situation.

The writer Irene Vallejo has collaborated on this project. Every donation is key. That is why they are looking for people who, like Vallejo, have the ability to donate several readings. “They request that a minimum of five books be sent,” she explained. In her case, among other works, the writer has sent a dedicated copy of her book ‘Infinity in a reed’. “The library does not exist yet, but we hope that it will exist very soon,” Vallejo commented.

Social networks are giving wings to this project. In fact, it was thanks to them that Vallejo learned of their existence. “Someone tagged me when they began to launch the collaboration proposal and I thought it was wonderful,” the author recalled. Now, the objective of ‘Books to Books’ is much broader. “Not only do they want a library, but they want to have a literary avenue,” Vallejo pointed out. “They want to become what is called ‘Villa de los libros'”, she added.

“We want Libros to be the capital of literature”

The mayor of the municipality, Raúl Arana, has defended his goal of using literature to become a tourist attraction. “We want Libros to be the capital of literature”, he assured. Now, Arana also warns that everything needs his time. “We only have the project yet”, he pointed out. In this context, the writer has vindicated the importance of this type of project. “It is very important to have a Public Library in the neighborhoods and in the towns. There are people who really do not have the possibility of accessing information,” Vallejo pointed out. “Public libraries are democratic spaces where inequalities can be leveled”, she has sentenced.

Literary walks, exhibitions of authors or the provision of a wide collection of books, are some of the main purposes of ‘Books to Books’. On the other hand, the literary collection has already reached the figure of 3,000 copies. “We are going to 1,000 books per week. In addition, the books that are arriving are practically new,” said the mayor. At the same time, Arana has also affirmed that the inhabitants of the municipality are receiving this initiative with great enthusiasm. “They are all collaborating,” he said.
