Booking.com pays 94 million euros to the Italian authorities. The Dutch booking website for holiday accommodations was involved in a tax case there for years. According to the Public Prosecution Service, the company had not paid 153 million euros in VAT between 2013 and 2019. Now the parties have agreed to a settlement.

The case came to light through an investigation by the Guardia di Finanza. In 2018, the financial investigation service examined the VAT payments of bed-and-breakfast owners in the Genoa area. This showed that Booking.com did not pay VAT. This would involve almost 900,000 transactions.

Booking.com itself took the position that VAT was not the responsibility of the booking platform, but of the owners of the accommodations themselves.

The company is now putting its money where its mouth is. Although Booking.com still maintains that it complied with Italian VAT law, it has not waited for a court ruling. “We are pleased to have reached this resolution through a settlement,” the company said.
