Fraudsters drain bank cards through the popular hotel booking site Booking.com. Especially dangerous in this case is that the fake e-mails come from the site’s system itself, and are not imitations, i.e. its defenses have been breached. This was reported by the British publications “Observer” and “Guardian”. They have reports from users of the site about receiving fake messages, and in all cases the message was received immediately before the user checked into a hotel booked on Booking.com.
Emails come from [email protected] and they claim that the person must provide their bank card details at a given link or their booking will be canceled within four or 12 hours (according to various reports). A notification of a received message comes through the user’s profile on the site or through his mobile application, which is why he may not even suspect it.
Booking.com denies the breach is their fault, blaming hotels. However, hoteliers with defrauded customers say the fault is not in their emails. “Observer” reports fraud with reservations for hotels in France, Italy, Great Britain. In the partner network of Booking.com, which is for hotels registered on the site, there are many complaints on the subject from hoteliers as well. They claim that the emails appear to have been sent by them, but the two-factor authentication system was disabled and they did not receive a text that they were sent.
This is yet another problem for the popular site. Hoteliers recently accused him of withholding payments from their clients for months. Booking.com then justified themselves with phishing scam attempts through certain accounts that needed additional verification.
