British author Samantha Harvey‘s science fiction novel ‘Orbital’ has won the 2024 Booker Prize. Samantha is the woman who will win the Booker Prize after 2019 and the British writer who will win the award after 2020. The prize money is 50000 pounds (approx. Rs. 53.78 lakhs). Orbital is the second shortest book in Booker Prize history, at just 136 pages. ‘Orbital’ is the story of six astronauts in the International Space Station. ‘Orbital’ is a creative testament to travelers from America, Italy, Russia, Britain and Japan witnessing 16 sunrises in one day and being immersed in the ethereal beauty of the universe. Edmund de Waal, chairman of the awards committee, said that “Orbital is far behind other works in terms of modern writing style and contemporary plot”.
Samantha Harvey replied that the award is dedicated to the survival of the earth and the recovery of peace and purity. The novel, written during Covid, was published in November 2023. This time, five of the six shortlisted for the prize were women.
