The Murcia region It was the thirteenth autonomous community in book publishing production in 2019, with 1.3% of the national total; or, what is the same, with 858 titles, according to the Statistics of the Editorial Production of Books published this Monday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).
This figure means that in the Murcian community 54 fewer titles were published in 2019 compared to the previous year (2018), which represents a 5.9 percent decrease. Regarding the type of publications, of the total of books published in the Region, 94.4 percent were in Spanish, 3 percent in two or more languages, 2.4% in another non-official language in Spain or in a foreign language and 0.1 percent in Basque.
At the national level, in Spain 64,154 titles were published in 2019, 3.2% more than in the previous year, which was 1.4 per 1,000 inhabitants. Of these, 82.5% were books and 17.5% brochures. The most edited topics were Literature (41.6% of the total), Social Sciences (14.5%) and Applied Sciences (10.1%).
Regarding the titles published, the autonomous communities with the highest editorial production in 2019 were Comunidad de Madrid (with 32.1% of the total), Cataluña (29.7%), Andalucía (10.8%), Comunidad Valenciana ( 5.6%) and Galicia (3.4%), while La Rioja (0.4%), Cantabria (0.8%) and Extremadura (0.9%) appear on the opposite side of the table.
The communities with the highest increases in published titles were the Canary Islands (28.1% more than in 2018), Cantabria (26.4%) and the Balearic Islands (22.9%). On the other hand, the greatest decreases occurred in Extremadura (-35.6%) and in La Rioja (-12.6%), followed by Murcia (-5.9%).
Spanish was the majority language for book publishing, 75.7% of the total (48,545 titles), Catalan accounted for 10% (6,420 titles), Galician 1.6% (1,048 titles), Basque 1 , 3% (836 titles) and the Valencian 1.1% (714 titles).
