Book of the day: Renaud’s witticisms

His “Fuck Expo!”, Scheduled until May 2, at the Philharmonie de Paris, is for the moment in parentheses, like many cultural events in France. To be patient, fans of the “irritating singer” have at their disposal a few not unpleasant substitutes, including a book, “Renaud à fleur de mots”, selecting statements by the artist in the media. Stéphane Deschamps played the background minors and unearthed a few words from an artist he describes as “our eternal good friend, deeply human, funny, fragile, sensitive and rebellious”. Nostalgic, the singer remembers a childhood “sweet as honey”. He recognizes Brassens as his master thinker (“he was the first to make me want to write my little moods in rhyme”) and Springsteen as his “idol”, his “god”. Do not “imagine that an artist gives himself up without shamelessness” (on that side, he served us!). And recalls that these are the words that are the salt of his life: “I am an author for pleasure, composer by necessity and performer by provocation.” Performer whose aura is exceptional, which does not fail to worry him: “Sometimes, it scares me: these people all together who look only at me. A word from me and they go wild, maybe -be riot. This responsibility is terrible. ” Another terrible realization, often expressed in recent years: “The love of the public is not measurable for me, it is so enormous. Every day, we do not give compliments, I am encouraged. Unfortunately, it does not. not enough not to be unhappy. I am melancholy. It is a real illness, which begins with fear and sadness and leads to depression. “

“Renaud at flower of words, confessions of an annoying singer”, compiled by Stéphane Deschamps (352 pages, € 19).
