In the second episode of ‘Rooijakkers Over de Floor’, presenter Art Rooijakkers (45) visits singer Bonnie St. Claire (72). Bonnie’s life sometimes has turbulent sides and she talks about this candidly during this episode. Her alcohol addiction is also discussed.
“Why didn’t I intervene?”

As a little girl, the singer secretly drank all her parents’ alcohol-filled glasses. Also in later life it turned out that Bonnie’s relationship with alcohol caused many problems. For example, the singer was caught twice for using alcohol behind the wheel. The second time, Bonnie even got an ankle bracelet. Also in her biography A Woman Came To The Liquor Store the singer writes about the major role that alcohol played in her life. With the book she hopes to send a clear message to the whole of the Netherlands: “I have intended with the book to make it known to the world that I no longer drink,” says the singer. “It is now bearing fruit,” she added.

“At some point I started to wonder if I still liked it. If you start the rosé in the morning, like I did, that’s not good at all,” Bonnie says. This was a sign for the singer to say goodbye to alcohol for good. Bonnie now has a new ‘addiction’: “Suddenly I smelled coffee. I’m really addicted to coffee now,” she says with a laugh.

Instead of a wine tasting, presenter Art takes the singer to a tea tasting. Once over for tea, Bonnie tells more about her alcohol abuse. “If you are really addicted to alcohol, then you don’t drink tea and coffee. And you don’t even eat anymore. I was really in that phase,” says the singer. “I drank booze right away in the morning. I’m not proud of what I’m saying now, but that’s how it happened,” she added. While Bonnie looks back on her dark days, she regrets one thing in particular. “I really blame myself for not intervening at times when something hurt me a lot. The moment people looked down on me, for example,” she says. “Then I think it’s so stupid of myself that I don’t intervene. Why didn’t I intervene?” Bonnie wonders aloud.

Bonnie’s drinking also caused a bad relationship with her family. Meanwhile, the rift between Bonnie and her family has been repaired. Art and Bonnie visit the singer’s brother together to talk about the dark period in her life. “That really touched us,” says Bonnie’s brother. “It was very difficult to deal with Bonnie. She hurt my mother a lot and my mother hurt her again,” he says. “Then we said it’s better if we part ways,” he adds. “We haven’t had any contact for about ten years. It was sad to see her slip like that,” Bonnie’s brother says.

Bonnie’s brother is especially sorry for the lost time. “But she’s back!” he says optimistically. ”I’m back baby!”, Bonnie adds cheerfully. Bonnie’s brother remembers exactly which day his sister contacted me again after years: ”On August 24, 2020 she sent me an app. She wanted to visit my mother,” he says. “We’ve been waiting for that, because we knew she was off the drink and that she was doing well. And we wanted to get back in touch,” he concludes.
