Bomb attack in Pakistan leaves two children dead

Quetta, Pakistan. A roadside bomb killed two children and wounded 15 others on Saturday near a police station in Pakistan’s troubled southwest, authorities said.

Police said the injured included officers and bystanders.

Some of the injured were hospitalised in critical condition, local police officer Mujirbur Rehman said, adding that the bodies of the dead had been taken to a nearby hospital.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack in Pishin, a district in Baluchistan province. Suspicion is likely to fall on separatist groups that have stepped up attacks on security forces and civilians in recent months.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi condemned the attack in a statement and expressed regret over the deaths of the children, while saying that those behind the incident “do not deserve to be called human.”

For years, Baluchistan has been the scene of a low-level insurgency by groups demanding independence from the central government in Islamabad. Although authorities say they have quelled the insurgency, violence in the province has persisted.
