The president of Peru, In Boluartedefended this Friday the “firm position” of his Government against “electoral fraud in Venezuela“, commenting on the commitment of its foreign policy to the principles of the defense of peace, freedom and democracy.
During a ceremony for the 203rd anniversary of the creation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Peru, Boluarte recalled that his country has “strongly” condemned the presidential elections in Venezuela, where the electoral authority has declared the president the winner. Nicolas Madurodue to the “lack of transparency and manipulation of results.”
The head of state added that “it does not matter if it is right or left, what prevails is the respect that each Venezuelan citizen has shown in order to determine their president.”
The Peruvian president declared that this is the respect they demand from Venezuela so that “we can understand each other,” but “without imposing ideologies,” only with respect for the will expressed at the polls, which according to the Venezuelan opposition gave the victory to the candidate Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia.
After supporting the work of the Foreign Ministry, Boluarte reiterated that Peru has advocated for a peaceful and democratic solution to the crisis in Venezuela, from forums such as the Organization of American States and the United Nations, with support for resolutions that “seek to pressure the regime (of Nicolás Maduro) to respect democratic principles.”
For his part, the Peruvian foreign minister, Javier Gonzalez-Olaecheahe said during the ceremony that the recent extraordinary session at the OAS to analyze the situation in Venezuela has not been a “defeat,” despite the frustration reflected on social media for not having reached consensus to request a review of the vote.
For this reason, the Minister of Foreign Affairs considered that the call of the opposition in the streets of Venezuela on Saturday will be “overwhelming.”
«Sooner rather than later, we will see how a regime that crushes freedom, that threatens and kills, is behind an obvious fraud that intends to stay in power»the chancellor said.
He said that his greatest challenge as Peru’s foreign minister would be to “help put an end to this horror, because we are all Americans.”
He added that the vast majority of Venezuelans living in their country, estimated at 1.5 million people, are honest professionals and workers who “are grateful” to Boluarte’s government.
Venezuela broke diplomatic relations with Peru after the latter, like others in the region, denounced electoral fraud in last Sunday’s elections and recognized González Urrutia as the winner. EFE (I)
