Bolsonaro’s party immediately expels members involved in storming party | Abroad

The Brazilian conservative-liberal party PL immediately expels all members involved in the storming of government buildings on Sunday. Supporters of former president Jair Bolsonaro stormed the parliament building, the Supreme Court and the presidential palace in the capital Brasilia on Sunday.

Party leader Valdemar Costa Neto left in a interview know that members recognized on video footage will be kicked out of the party. He kept quiet about Bolsonaro’s role and his future with the party.

Costa Neto stressed that “anyone caught vandalizing government buildings or using other forms of violence” will be immediately expelled. He said the storming was the work of an “extremist minority” who “does not represent” his party.

In Sunday’s storms, protesters broke into several government buildings and caused extensive damage. They refuse to accept Bolsonaro’s election defeat in October. The former president himself has not yet officially recognized the victory of his successor Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, unlike his party.

Nearly two thousand arrests were made by the police around the storms. Nearly 700 people have already been released for “humanitarian reasons”. According to the police, this mainly concerns the elderly, people with health problems and parents of young children. Almost twelve hundred people are still detained because of their involvement.

The storms in Brazil were almost a copy of the storming of the US Capitol by supporters of former President Donald Trump. In the US, several people involved have been sentenced to prison. Yet several Republicans are still trying to justify the storming of two years ago.
