Bolsonaro says Brazil was one of the countries that suffered the least from the pandemic

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro said on Friday that one of the countries that suffered the least from the covid-19 pandemic was Brazil, which has more than 4.2 million confirmed cases and 129,000 deaths.

“We can see, especially in the press outside, since in the ‘media’ from here it is difficult to appear good news, that Brazil was one of the countries that suffered less from the pandemic, given the measures of the Federal Government”, said Bolsonaro, in the Brazilian state of Bahia, cited by Brazilian newspapers.

Brazil, which has about 212 million inhabitants, is the second country in the world with the highest total number of deaths (129522), just behind the United States (191802), which has a population of more than 300 million inhabitants.

Regarding the number of cases of infection with the new coronavirus, Brazil occupies the third position worldwide, with 4,238,446 infected, behind India, a nation with 1.3 billion inhabitants and 4.5 million infected, and United States, which totals almost 6.4 million diagnoses.

Taking into account the number of cases per million inhabitants, Brazil is in 11th place.

“We are practically winning the pandemic. The Government has done everything to minimize the negative effects of the pandemic, helping mayors and governors with health needs,” added the Brazilian head of state, who since the covid-19 arrived in the country , at the end of February, was quite skeptical about the severity of the disease.

As measures that helped fight the pandemic in the country, Jair Bolsonaro mentioned a monthly aid for unemployed and workers without a work contract, credits for micro and small companies, as well as the transfer of funds to governors and mayors.

Since August 12, the weekly average of deaths caused by the new coronavirus in Brazil has been below 1,000 and, since the 28th, below 900. This week, the average has remained below 800.

The World Health Organization warned that, although Brazil is going through a crucial phase, “in which it seems that things can improve”, it is necessary that local authorities take the time to do whatever is necessary to confirm this trend.

The covid-19 pandemic has already claimed at least 910,300 deaths and more than 28.2 million cases of infection in 196 countries and territories, according to a report by the French agency AFP.

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected in late December in Wuhan, a city in central China.

After Europe succeeded China as the center of the pandemic in February, the American continent is now the one with the most confirmed cases and the most deaths.
