According to the Spanish newspaper, the former army captain set up a crisis cabinet to overcome the dissatisfaction of the players and, according to advisers, holding the Copa América is “a matter of honor”. The reserve military wants the athletes to play the tournament as a kind of “political war”.
Last Saturday, Bolsonaro participated in a videoconference meeting with members of Conmebol and reaffirmed his support and desire to hold the championship between South American teams in Brazil. Captains of the 10 teams were surveyed, but none wanted to participate.
Both Bolsonaro and Rogério Caboclo, president of the CBF, see Copa América as an opportunity to strengthen their positions. The tournament stopped being held in Colombia and Argentina, as initially planned, due to political demonstrations and lack of control in the cases of Covid-19.
However, Caboclo is accused of sexual and moral harassment by a CBF employee and has no political support within the entity. In addition, players and the technical committee of the Brazilian team are preparing a manifesto about the Copa America.
