Bolsonaro hints at participation in Brazil’s next presidential election | Abroad

Brazil’s former president Jair Bolsonaro on Saturday hinted at a possible participation in the 2026 presidential election. The right-wing politician said at a conservative conference in the United States that he feels that “his mission is still not over”, but at the same time it was not clear whether he will ever return home.

Bolsonaro also questioned the results of the previous elections again. He narrowly lost to the left-wing former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Ahead of the poll, Bolsonaro stated that he could only lose through fraud. His supporters attacked government buildings in the capital Brasilia on January 8 out of dissatisfaction with the election results.

Donald Trump

The Brazilian politician received standing ovations during the conference, for example when he spoke about relaxing gun control rules. The multi-day event will conclude with a speech by former US President Donald Trump. The two former leaders, who both served a single term, are expected to meet.

The 67-year-old Bolsonaro, also known as the Tropical Trump, unexpectedly traveled to the United States at the end of December. He did so a few days before being succeeded by Lula. Bolsonaro said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal that he will return to Brazil in March to lead the opposition. Whether that is still the plan is unknown.
