Bolsonaro disputes the election results and calls for the cancellation of votes
Jair Bolsonaro disputes his defeat in the Brazilian presidential elections and calls on electoral authorities to eliminate votes cast on most of the country’s electronic voting machines.
Bolsonaro’s lawyers point to a software glitch that independent experts at the AP news agency said had nothing to do with the validity of the election results.
If the votes are eliminated, Bolsonaro will be left with 51% of the remaining votes, and thus will be re-elected, Marcelo de Bessa, the lawyer who filed the complaint on behalf of the president, said Tuesday.
The country’s electoral authority has already declared former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva the winner of the election and prominent politicians, including several Bolsonaro allies, have said the election result is final.
In cities across Brazil, Bolsonaro supporters have refused to do the same, while Bolsonaro has not explicitly stated that he lost.
However, his cabinet chief said the president had approved the move to a new government.
