Bologna lost to Fiorentina in the quarter-finals of the Coppa Italia. The Dutch-tinted Bologna could not get further than a 0-0 score for 121 minutes and eventually lost on penalties.
In a nerve-wracking cup match, Zirkzee almost scored after half an hour. The 22-year-old top talent beautifully created space for a shot, but the ball flew off the top of the crossbar into the crowd. Neither team scored in the second half.
After regular playing time and extra time, penalties decided the match. The team from Florence, a finalist in the cup tournament last year, secured a semi-final spot in the penalty shootout: 5-4. Zirkzee converted the second penalty for Bologna, after which Austrian defender Stefan Posch was the only Bologna player to miss.
In addition to Zirkzee, former AZ player Sam Beukema also played the entire match. Sydney van Hooijdonk did not get playing time at Bologna. The other quarter-finals are scheduled for later this week. Lazio will face AS Roma on Wednesday, while AC Milan will visit Atalanta. Juventus will face Frosinone a day later.
