Suspecting that the new coronavirus strain circulating in Brazil is in Bolivia, the Bolivian Ministry of Health sends tests to Brazilian laboratories.
“We have sent the samples to Brazil so that these samples can be analyzed and the results can tell us if this new strain is circulating in Bolivia,” Health Minister Jeyson Auza reported at a press conference.
In the Amazon region of Beni, on the border with Brazil, in recent days an increase in cases was reported that drew the attention of health authorities due to the rapidity of the disease, so “provisions are made,” explained Auza .
“We are concerned about what is happening in Beni,” he added.
Bolivia and Brazil have a long border.
Tests for early detention were conducted over the weekend and health authorities traveled to the region to deliver 60,000 vaccines for people with underlying illnesses and older adults.
In the country, cases are in a slow decline after an outbreak of the disease.
So far in Bolivia there have been more than 264,000 cases of the new coronavirus and 12,060 deaths, according to the Johns Hopkins University Center for Science and Systems Engineering.
