Former Bolivian President Evo Morales today called for an investigation by regional authorities into the alleged assassination attempt on him on Sunday in the Cochabamba region of central Bolivia. The government called it “staged”.

“We demand an international and independent investigation,” Morales wrote in a post on Platform X (formerly Twitter), referring to the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) and the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of the Americas (ALBA).

Evo Morales, who served as president of Bolivia from 2006 to 2019, said his car was the target of an armed attack on Sunday in the Chapare region, accusing special agents of the Bolivian security services of trying to assassinate him.

The government gave a completely different version and claims that Morales’ motorcade did not stop at a Drug Enforcement Administration checkpoint and some opened fire, injuring a police officer. Interior Minister Eduardo del Castillo called the incident “staged”.

Today, Evo Morales went on the counterattack and directly accused the minister of wanting to kill him. “Organized and ordered the business,” he claimed in a post on the X platform.

The incident worsens the political crisis in Bolivia, where for three weeks supporters of Evo Morales have blocked the main streets of the country, demanding the resignation of President Arce.
