Bokova: The campaign against me is unworthy –

/ world today news/ I am sad and disappointed by the scandals that accompany the Bulgarian nomination for Secretary General of the United Nations (UN). UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova said this on the program “This Morning” on bTV.

Over the years, I avoided responding to any attacks and criticisms against me, because that’s how I fall to their level, she added. Bokova defined the attacks against her as a “slanderous campaign full of lies and inconsistencies”.

Whatever the Bulgarian government decides, there will be no personal drama for me, said Bokova. Within weeks, I wouldn’t want to say months, Bulgaria must determine its position on the country’s candidacy for UN Secretary General, she added.

When asked about the past of her father – Georgi Bokov, former editor-in-chief of “Rabotnichesko delo” magazine, Bokova said that she finds it absurd that her colleagues criticize her. “If we follow this logic, everyone should say who their father is,” believes the Director General of UNESCO. According to her, children should not be responsible for the actions of their parents, because “in a democratic society people should be judged for their own actions”.

“I had forgotten a language 25 years ago. I have been in the public space for 25 years, practically everything is known about me. During all these years I have worked for the democratic development of Bulgaria”, added Bokova.

She categorically refused to make assessments of the domestic policy, as well as to speak on the foreign policy of the government.

Irina Bokova did not hide that she receives one of the largest salaries in the UN system, which can be publicly verified.

“In some places they ask me, ‘Are you a candidate for France?’ Even more often I am asked “Are you a candidate for China, for Africa, for Latin America?”. “If I am a candidate, I am a candidate for Bulgaria,” said Bokova. We are concentrated here in the same geographical positions, she believes. According to her, in the race for the post of UN Secretary General, the successful candidate must be supported “if not by all member countries, then at least by most”.

Work is underway to include the martenitsa in the list of UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage, as well as a project for Magurata and a joint project for the beech forests of Europe in a joint project, Irina Bokova also announced.
