Boko Haram Leader Reportedly Killed Suicide

“Shekau would rather be humiliated in the afterlife than to be humiliated in this world. He killed himself instantly by detonating an explosive device,” reads a voice recording in Kanuri that is similar to that of ISWAP leader Abu Musab Al-Barnawi, as reported by AFP on Monday (7/6). /2021).

The recording, which is indicated to contain the voice of the leader of the ISWAP group, only appeared to the public 2 weeks after news of Abubakar Shekau’s death circulated.

The militant group Boko Haram has not officially commented on the death of their leader. Meanwhile, the Nigerian army is still investigating the claim.

The ISWAP group explains in the audio that they are sending fighters to the Boko Haram enclave in the Sambisa forest. That’s when the group found Shekau sitting inside his house and engaged in a gunfight.

“From there he retreated and fled, running and wandering in the bushes for five days. However, the fighters continued to search and hunt him before they could find him,” the voice said.

After finding him in the bush, ISWAP fighters urged him and his followers to repent. But Shekau refused and committed suicide.

“We are very happy,” the voice said, adding that Shekau was “someone who commits terrorism and unimaginable atrocities.”
