Jakarta –
One hundred thousand more workers plan to celebrate International Labor Day or May Day in Jakarta International Stadium next May. The May Day plan at JIS was met with many rejections.
The President of the Indonesian Workers Union Conference (KSPI) Said Iqbal said there were two options for the location of the event, namely at Istora Senayan or the Jakarta International Stadium (JIS). Said explained, on May 1, there will be 300 workers who will commemorate Labor Day at the General Election Commission (KPU) and Hotel Indonesia (HI) roundabouts.
Then, which was held on May 14 was a continuation of the observance of Labor Day. “One hundred thousand more workers throughout Jabodetabek will take action at the DPR RI, then will then go to Istora Senayan or Jakarta International Stadium to celebrate May Day celebrations,” he said in a virtual press conference, Wednesday (20/4/2022).
Initially, the celebration of Labor Day will be held at Gelora Bung Karno (GBK). However, currently GBK is undergoing renovation or maintenance. Therefore, the Jakarta International Stadium in North Jakarta is a location option other than GBK.
“On May 14, 2022, the Labor Party together with elements of the labor movement and other movements, 4 major trade union confederations, and 60 national trade union federations and the Indonesian Peasant Union held a May Day celebration at the Jakarta International Stadium or Istora Senayan,” he continued.
Jakarta Deputy Governor’s Response
Deputy Governor of DKI Jakarta Ahmad Riza Patria said that his party needed to review this request first. Riza admitted that he had not yet received a letter of application for the use of JIS for the demonstration in May.
“Indeed, we will study it later. We will study every request and request from the community, whatever their interests, we will review whether it is possible or not,” said Riza at DKI Jakarta City Hall, Jl Medan Merdeka Selatan, Central Jakarta, Thursday (21 /4).
Riza said JIS is currently being carried out soft launching. He also explained that JIS was not only intended for sports activities. However, for the sake of workers later, Riza will check first.
“Indeed we will use it for the interests of sports, arts and culture, religion, social and other positive interests. However, regarding the desire (action) we will re-check whether there is really a desire, we will see if it is possible,” he continued.
Riza also said Jakarta was still hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. He hopes that the aspirations can be conveyed through representatives rather than inviting the masses in large numbers.
“We ask that if there is input, opinions can be conveyed through deliberation by being conveyed directly enough through representatives, through letters, and so on. It doesn’t have to be that the submission of opinions must be followed by an excessive number of people. We are worried if there is an extraordinary mass gathering , many of which are excessive, it can disrupt public services, disrupt order, and fear being infiltrated by other interests. We must guard it together,” he added.
