At an event bringing together global sustainability leaders, Bogotá Mayor Carlos Fernando Galán is actively participating in New York’s Climate Week, where he addresses the crucial issue of water security.

Galán joined the “Water Secure Cities” discussion panel, led by Saroj Jha, Global Director for Water at the World Bank, along with the Mayor of Phoenix, Arizona, Kate Gallego.

Collaboration for Water Security

During the roundtable, mayors discussed effective strategies to foster collaboration between the public and private sectors, seeking to establish good practices that ensure access to and sustainable management of water in cities.

In this regard, Galán shared the initiatives implemented in Bogotá, highlighting the optimization of the Tibitoc Plant as an example of success in water resource management.

This plant has been key in improving the water infrastructure of the Colombian capital, contributing to long-term sustainability.

«Water management is essential for urban development. We are committed to making Bogotá an example of water security»Galán said during his speech.

Migration as an opportunity

At another panel, entitled “Working together to accelerate the social and economic integration of migrants in cities,” Galán discussed the positive impact of migration on economic growth.

Together with the mayors of Montevideo and Chicago, the mayor of Bogotá highlighted how migration can be a key driver for local and global economies.

“In Bogotá, we have turned the challenge of migration into an opportunity. Initiatives such as the Centros Intégrate have enabled the integration of thousands of Venezuelan migrants, benefiting both them and our communities,” explained Galán.

However, he also acknowledged that significant challenges remain, highlighting the need for greater support from the national government and the international community.

Looking to the Future

The World Bank and the Water Resources Group have become strategic allies in water management in Bogotá. During the event, Galán spoke with Jha and Michael Webster, leader of the 2030 Water Resources Group, about the plan being implemented to manage drought in the city.

This approach seeks to ensure the long-term sustainability of water sources, reaffirming Bogotá’s commitment to water security.

Bogotá’s participation in Climate Week in New York underscores its role as a leader in sustainability and urban management.

With a focus on collaboration and innovation, the Colombian capital is demonstrating that it is possible to transform challenges into opportunities for social and economic development.
