Bogotá Cinematheque: Cycle of Tribute to Women in March – Cinema and Tv – Culture

The cinema of the Mexican Yulene Olaizola is unclassifiable: each of her productions is a journey of reality and fiction that delves into the nightmares and joys of its protagonists. Her narrative proposal navigates through different film genres and her stories have established her as one of the best Latin American filmmakers.

He is only 39 years old and his first feature film –which was his laureate doctoral thesis–, the 2008 documentary ‘Intimacies of Shakespeare and Victor Hugo’, won more than 30 awards at international festivals.

Starting this Tuesday, March 8, the Bogotá Cinematheque is exhibiting a retrospective of Olaizola’s work which includes his most recent production, Selva trágica, a thriller that takes place in 1920, on the border between Mexico and Belize, in the depths of the Mayan jungle, where there is no law and myths prevail. There, a group of Mexican workers cross paths with Agnes, a mysterious and beautiful young woman, generating tension and fueling her fantasies and desires. She runs away from an arranged marriage. They have unknowingly awakened the Xtabay, an ancient legend of the jungle. The film was co-produced by Contravía Films of Colombia.

“It is very significant that a retrospective of my work is held in Bogotá, it is the first time that I have had the opportunity to present all my films together, in the same place, and to be able to talk with the public about my 14-year career with 5 films. ”, expressed the filmmaker. “Colombia is a country with which I have a special bond, my grandfather is from Bogotá and I have very dear relatives. On the other hand, my latest film is a co-production with Colombia, and I had the pleasure of collaborating with Colombian filmmakers that I admire, such as Oscar Ruiz Navia from Contravía Films and the photographer Sofía Oggioni.”

The retrospective, which will run until Sunday, has other titles from the Mexican company: Artificial Paradises (2011), Fogo (2012) and Epitaph (2015).

This curatorship is connected with the programming that the Cinematheque dedicates to women in its month. The Cartelera Transfeminista collective, made up of Argentine creators, will present its productions from March 18 to 24 in a cycle that seeks to “expand the views and approaches of women from and on the audiovisual,” it says in a statement.
