Perušič and Schweiner entered the Vienna championship as seconds. They won three matches on the hot sand in the Austrian capital, but today they came across excellent Dutch players. Twenty-one-year-old De Groot in particular did not let a single attack of the Czech pair fall in the field, and with Boermans they returned this year’s defeat from the World Circuit in Sochi to the natives of Prague.
Perušič and Schweiner wanted to embellish a life season at the European Championships, in which they collected a complete collection of medals at world tournaments: in Doha they were the first Czechs to win gold in March, in Cancún they won bronze and in June silver at home in Ostrava. The Olympic tournament in Tokyo ruined Perušič’s positive test for coronavirus and they did not pass the group after the initial contumination. They wanted all the more to taste in Vienna.

Today, however, the Dutch were initially flawless, had no problem with income and did not let the polar bears Perušič or Schweiner’s block stand out in the attack, which scored only once in the first set. The Czechs soon lost by four points 7:11 and did not withdraw the lead.

In the second set, however, they hoped to advance to the semifinals, especially when Boermans made a series of three mistakes. However, De Groot held the partner and at the end of the tie-break it was he who arranged for the Dutch to fight for European medals on Sunday. After a triumph a month ago at a four-star tournament in Gstaad, they reach for another stage.
Czech beach volleyball is still waiting for the men’s medal success at the European Championships, the last time was taken care of by the 1996 European champions Marek Pakosta and Michal Palinek. The women’s pair, on the other hand, were among the best in recent years, so far the last medal was the bronze of Barbora Hermannová with Markéta Nausch Sluková from 2018.
