Several people have spontaneously registered with the BoerCurgerBeweging who want to succeed the resigned deputy Jurie van den Berg. According to the party chairman of the BBB, Erik Stegink, these open applications have not yet led to discussions, but the party hopes to put forward a new director as soon as possible. This may be someone from inside or outside Flevoland and candidates who are already known to the party are also taken into account.
‘Careful process’
Stegink emphasizes that the selection process must be careful to find the right person. Because such a thorough process takes time, he believes it is not possible to present a representative before November. The party chairman understands that the situation surrounding Jurie van den Berg can be damaging to the party. “To what extent that is the case, time will tell,” says Stegink.
Discussion about redundancy pay
Jurie van den Berg resigned as deputy on Tuesday. His position had come under heavy pressure after various factions in the Provincial Council criticized his performance. The timing of his resignation raised several questions among the opposition. Van den Berg had been in office for just over three months. He is therefore entitled to two years’ redundancy pay. If he had submitted his resignation before October 1, it would have been six months.
‘Annoying’
Chairman Caroline van der Plas of the House of Representatives faction of the BBB says against this in a response RTL News that it is a Flevoland issue, but that she finds it difficult. According to her, the redundancy pay scheme should be looked at in general. She herself would not use the scheme. “I wouldn’t do it myself.”
The subject is sensitive at the BBB, because the party previously expressed strong criticism of Frans Timmermans, who as a former European Commissioner receives redundancy pay and is now party leader of GroenLinks-PvdA.
