Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport requests strengthening of gas inspection
On the 22nd (local time), Reuters reported that Boeing of the United States recommended the suspension of the 777 aircraft that caused engine failure during the recent operation. Domestic airlines, such as Korean Air, also have the corresponding model. On this day, Boeing announced that it recommended the suspension of operations of Boeing 777-200 and 777-300 equipped with Pratt & Whitney’s PW4000 series engines. Boeing said that there are 128 models equipped with the engine in the world, of which only 69 are in operation and the remaining 59 are not. The engine in question was installed on a United Airlines flight 328, which broke the engine wing while flying from Denver, USA to Honolulu, Hawaii on the 20th. At that time, the engine caught fire and debris fell into the residential area, but there was no human injury.
It is known that only the US, Korea, and Japan are operating the 777 aircraft, which are undergoing phased reduction due to aging aircraft. The U.S. stopped operating 24 units after the accident after United Airlines operated 24 units. In Korea, Korean Air has 16 units, Asiana Airlines has 9 units, and Jin Air has 4 units. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport requested each airline to strengthen their aircraft inspection on the 22nd, and airlines are also reducing their own operations. Korean Air decided not to operate all 16 aircraft. Asiana Airlines also stopped operating its 777 aircraft altogether. Jin Air said it plans to respond by looking at the trend. The day before, on the 21st, Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport ordered the suspension of 777 aircraft.
