Dave Calhoun, the CEO of American aircraft manufacturer Boeing, has acknowledged that his company made a mistake with the 737 MAX 9 aircraft. He admitted this on Tuesday at a meeting with Boeing employees.
A panel in the fuselage of an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 9 came loose on Friday, shortly after takeoff from the airport of the American city of Portland, in the northwest of the country. The plane, with 171 passengers and six crew members on board, was at an altitude of 5,000 meters at the time. No one was injured. After that incident, the American aviation authority FAA grounded dozens of aircraft of that type for inspections.
At a meeting at a Boeing factory in Renton, Washington, Calhoun said on Tuesday that the company must admit its mistake. The issue must be further addressed “with full transparency, at every step of the process,” the CEO is quoted by a Boeing spokesperson.
Calhoun says he now counts on the aviation authority “to ensure that all aircraft that are allowed to fly are also safe, and that this incident will not be repeated.”
On Monday, both United Airlines and Alaska Airlines announced that inspections revealed defects in several Boeing 737 MAX 9 aircraft.
